Active Constituents
  • Buprenorphine 0.3 mg as buprenorphine hydrochloride
Indications
  • Post-operative analgesia in the dog, cat and horse.
  • Potentiation of the sedative effects of centrally-acting agents in the dog and horse.
  • When used in horses, an intravenous sedative should be administered within five minutes prior to injection of buprenorphine.

Buprelieve contains 0.3 mg/ml buprenorphine and is licensed for use in Dogs and cats via intramuscular or intravenous injection, and in Horses via intravenous injection only.

In dogs, cats and horses, Buprelieve can be used for post-operative analgesia. In the dog and horse, it can also be used to potentiate the effects of other centrally acting agents, such as sedatives.

Horse Dosage

10 micrograms per kg (3.3 ml per 100 kg body weight) for post-operative analgesia or 5 micrograms per kg
(1.7 ml per 100 kg body weight) for potentiation of sedation

Buprelieve should be given pre-operatively as part of a premedication protocol, to ensure adequate analgesia upon recovery.

• Signs of sedation normally appear by 15 minutes post injection.
• Analgesic effects in dogs and cats appear around 30 minutes, with peak effects at about 1 – 1.5 hours
• In horses, analgesic effects occur during the first 15 – 30 minutes post injection, with peak effects occurring between 0.75 and 6 hours after administration

Use with other agents

The mild sedative effects of buprenorphine can be potentiated by other centrally acting agents such as tranquillisers, sedatives and hypnotics.
Buprelieve can be used with common sedatives and induction agents including:
• Acepromazine
• Alfaxalone
• Atropine
• Alpha 2 agonists*
• Isoflurane & sevoflurane
• Ketamine
• Propofol

Please note when used in combination with sedatives, the depressive effects on heart rate and respiration may be augmented.
*(medetomidine, dexmedetomidine, detomidine, romifidine and xylazine)
